A way of living
Long before The Organic Collective became what it is today, it began as a simple idea shared between people who believed there had to be a better way to connect people with good food.
Over more than 26 years, that simple idea has grown into something we never could have fully imagined. Not because of a grand plan, but because we kept listening, adapting and building trusted relationships with growers, suppliers and the Perth community.
Here's a little of that journey.
Built over time,
not overnight
Time spent working in gardening, environmental and community projects, with a new growing family, brought one important question into focus.
Where does our food come from?
Certified organic wasn't the popular choice back then. It wasn't a trend or a marketing idea. It simply felt like the right path. Supporting farmers who cared for their soil, waterways and the environment became the foundation of everything that followed. Then a kitchen table discussion between Damian and Bernie old high school mates....Where it all started. Seven families, sharing good food.
Our first packing space was a small garden shed out the back.There was no refrigeration.One morning a week we collected fresh produce from growers before packing boxes by hand and delivering everything the very same day.People paid with cash left under the doormat.Service was personal. Trust came naturally. As more families joined, one delivery day became two, then three. Word spread almost entirely through word of mouth recommendations.
As more Perth families discovered organic food, our little buying group naturally evolved into a home delivery service. What never changed was the philosophy. We wanted to shorten the distance between the farm and the family table, support local growers, celebrate seasonal eating and build genuine relationships rather than simply process transactions. It continued growing as the community grew alongside it.
Eventually we outgrew the shed and moved into an unused old butcher shop in Hamilton Hill. That little shop became much more than a retail store. It became a place where conversations happened, growers were celebrated and the community connected around good food. Today, it's still our home.
As life changed, so id the world, expectations and so did we. Online ordering, home delivery across Perth and flexible Seasonal Boxes made it easier for busy households to access certified organic food. The technology changed. Our purpose didn't. Every improvement has been about making good food easier to enjoy while keeping the personal service that has always defined who we are.
Today, The Organic Collective brings together Seasonal Boxes, Pick Your Own produce, an organic grocery store, our Hamilton Hill shop and a passionate team who genuinely care about every order that leaves our warehouse. We've been privileged to support thousands of Perth households over the years while building lasting relationships with growers, suppliers and customers who have become part of our story.
We're still independently owned. We're still learning. We're still adapting. Most importantly, we're still guided by the same simple belief that started everything back in 1999. Good food grows in good company. And we're grateful to everyone who has helped grow this community with us.
We follow the seasons,
not the shortcuts
Through every change over the years, new systems, new tools, new ways of ordering, one thing has stayed the same. We work with certified organic growers and choose what's good, fresh, and in season, never what can be forced or stored indefinitely.
Real food has real variability, and we see that as something to embrace, not avoid.
How food is grown and shared has a direct impact on our health, our community, and the land.
Choosing certified organic is one way to be part of that. Not perfectly, but consciously.
A return to the
original idea
Simple, seasonal, organic food, shared with the community, now supported by better tools and a clearer direction. After more than twenty-five years, it still comes back to the same thing.
